Arthritis is a pain or inflammation that commonly occurs in the fingers, elbow, hips jaw, knees, or any other place where a joint present between bones. There is no cure for it especially for rheumatoid arthritis which is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes the body’s defense system to attack itself particularly affects the joints and soft tissues. Turmeric is a bright yellow spice belongs to ginger family that has been used for health, beauty and cooking purpose from many centuries in India, China and other countries. It is used as traditional medicine to treat many varieties of ailments including reduction of arthritis and its inflammation, etc. especially the root and rhizome or underground stem are used for medicinal purpose. Is Turmeric good for Arthritis?

- Curcumin (an active ingredient) is a highly bio-available form of turmeric which is more effective in treating the arthritis particularly rheumatoid arthritis symptoms including the tenderness and swelling of joints. It works better on joint pains and swelling than NSAID’s as it is proved by research that conducted at Italy.
- It blocks certain enzymes and cytokines that lead to inflammation and acts as pain killer by increasing mobility in the joints and then reducing the stiffness.
- Turmeric and its active compound called curcumin are used to reduce the inflammation by lowering histamine levels and possibly by increasing the production of natural cortisone by the adrenal glands.
Turmeric for Arthritis:
You can try any of these methods that are mentioned below to get relief from the arthritis, its pain, inflammation, rheumatoid arthritis, arthritis in dogs, psoriatic arthritis, etc.
Method – 1: (Turmeric)
- Buy the turmeric spice in large quantities as the turmeric is very useful in treating the arthritis and other medical problems.
- Try to consume a teaspoon of turmeric everyday in any form like sprinkling 1/4 teaspoon of turmeric on the scrambled eggs, adding it to the soups, stir fry or mixing into sauces like pasta sauce or salad dressings and then increasing the quantity day – day.
- Now increase the turmeric intake to 1/2 a teaspoon per day after completing few weeks
- Here, you can also add a dash of cayenne pepper to the turmeric that helps to boost your turmeric and make it more effective than before.
- Follow this for a month and after that increase the level of turmeric to 1 teaspoon and maintain this level to prevent the joint pains and inflammation.
- Or you can take a teaspoon of turmeric mixed in a glass of warm milk and drink this milk at night time before going to bed to get relaxed sleep without any pain.
- Regularize your turmeric intake from our diet (but not too much) to get relief from the joint pains and inflammation caused by the arthritis or any other medical problems.
- This process is also used to treat arthritis pain and rheumatoid arthritis.
Method – 2: (Turmeric with Egg Yolk and Coconut Oil)
- Take a tablespoon of turmeric powder and add this to 1 – 2 beaten egg yolks and a teaspoon or two of melted coconut oil
- Use a hand blender on high speed to emulsify the powder and have this to get rid of the arthritis problem.
- Daily repeat the process once or twice a day until you feel complete relief from the arthritis.
Method – 3: (Turmeric with Water)
- Take a quart of boiling water and add a tablespoon of turmeric powder into it
- Mix it well and boil it for 10 minutes then it creates a 12% of curcumin solution.
- You can drink this solution once when it gets cooled completely
- Drink this water within 4 hours otherwise the curcumin will gradually fall off to 6% in about 6 hours
- This has woody taste but you have to drink this for therapeutic benefits rather than flavor.
- Or you can consume moderate amount of turmeric on regular basis from your diet will be beneficial to prevent the arthritis pain without any side effects.
- Also used to treat rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.
Method – 4: (Turmeric with Lemon Grass, Cayenne Pepper and Coconut Oil)
- Take 5 tablespoons each of turmeric powder and cayenne pepper powder
- Add an ounce of organic dry lemongrass and 2 cups of coconut oil
- Mix all these ingredients in an 8-inch square glass oven pan
- If you have solid coconut oil then melt the oil in a double boiler before blending with the herbs.
- Then put this pan in preheated oven at 150 degrees for about 3 – 5 hours.
- Strain the herbs by using cheesecloth or a filter into a glass jar and close the lid tightly.
- Keep this jar at room temperature that makes this ointment solid in colder climate and more liquid in hotter regions.
- Finally apply this on the skin to relieve joint pain and arthritis of all types as often as needed.
Method – 5: (Turmeric with Ginger)
- Take one-inch piece of each herb i.e. turmeric and ginger root. Ginger also contains anti-inflammatory compounds that reduce the swelling and stiffness.
- Or else you can take 1/2 teaspoon each of powdered ginger and turmeric powder instead of root.
- Brew this in 2 cups of boiling water for about 15 – 30 minutes
- Strain the tea to remove the herbs and add a little bit of honey or stevia to sweeten the tea
- Drink this regularly to get complete relief from the arthritis.
- Or you can also mix turmeric with other substances like black pepper, pineapple, etc.
- This process also used to treat any form of arthritis and its pain.
Method – 6: (Turmeric with Dried Ginger Root and Fenugreek Powder)
- Take equal quantities of turmeric powder, dried ginger powder and fenugreek powder
- Mix all these powders well and take this a teaspoon along with warm water
- Take this twice a day daily until you get complete relief from the arthritis (especially gout, osteoarthritis) and its pain.
Method – 7: (Turmeric Powder with Coconut Oil)
- Take a tablespoon of turmeric powder and add sufficient amount of coconut oil
- Mix it well to make it like a paste
- Apply it on the affected area topically and leave it like that for few hours or until it dried completely.
- Wash it off with water and repeat it as often as needed to get complete relief from the arthritis.
Method – 8: (Turmeric with DMSO Solution)
- Take 2 tablespoons of turmeric powder and add this to one or more tablespoons of a 70 % DMSO (Dimethyl Sulfate).
- To make this 70% DMSO solution, you have to dilute 99.9% DMSO with distilled water equal to 30% of the DMSO amount.
- Mix it well to make it like a paste and then apply this by rubbing it over the sore joints
- Allow it to get dry for few minutes and then rinse it off with water
- Or apply this paste; wrap the joint in plastic food wrap and cover it with a heating pad for about 20 – 30 minutes.
- But make sure add more water if the paste is irritating your skin.
- Also used to give relief from the arthritis pain.
Method – 9: (Turmeric with Powdered Lime and Saltpeter)
- Take a teaspoon of turmeric powder, a little powdered lime and saltpeter
- Mix it well to make it like a paste and apply this paste on the painful area
- Held in that place with either cheesecloth or plastic food wrap.
- Repeat this regularly to get relief from the arthritis pain.
Method – 10: (Turmeric with Lime Juice)
- Take 2 tablespoons of turmeric powder and a tablespoon of lime juice
- Mix it well and add this to small amount of boiling water to make it like a thick paste.
- Apply this paste topically on the arthritis affected part of the body and leave it on for few minutes.
- Wash it off with water and repeat doing the same thing until you get complete relief from the arthritis pain and muscle aches, etc.
Method – 11: (Turmeric Paste)
- Take 1/4 cup of turmeric powder and add this to 1/2 cup of pure water
- Mix it well and simmer over medium high heat for at least 7 minutes
- Remember to stir it constantly then at some point, you will notice a thick paste form
- Then turn off the heat and let it cool for few minutes and also add additional water while cooking when it gets too dry.
- Once it cooled completely then put this into a glass jar and store it in refrigerator
- At last apply this paste over the affected area and then allow it to dry it
- Rinse it off with water and then repeat the same regularly to get complete relief from the arthritis pain and inflammation.
Turmeric for Psoriatic Arthritis:
Psoriatic arthritis is a form of inflammatory arthritis that can develop in the people who are suffering with psoriasis. This turmeric herb has powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that help to ease the pain and it has the ability to alter TNF cytokine expression. This helps to minimize the psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis flares.
Method:
- Take turmeric in any supplement form like pills, tablets, in curries, salad dressing, etc.

- Turmeric when taken in large doses may interact with some prescription drugs and also have bad impact on your health. So check with your doctor before taking turmeric when you're suffering from or taking medicines for diabetes, inflammation, cholesterol, blood thinners (as it cause bleeding and stomach ache for blood thinners).
- The dosage of the turmeric as per the arthritis type will be like this… for osteoarthritis, you have to take 500 mg of specific turmeric extract twice a day or 500 mg of non-commercial products 4 times a day.
- For rheumatoid arthritis, you have to take 500mg of specific formulation (Curcumin) of turmeric twice daily. You can also use the turmeric in any supplement form like capsules, pills and the recommended dosage in capsule form will be 1000 milligrams a day.
- Taking turmeric as an herbal treatment plan for arthritis in between meals will be more helpful rather than with food to enhance the ability to reduce the pain and stiffness due to inflammation. As when taken with food it acts more on the digestive process rather than on joint pains.
